Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving History

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621 by the first English religious dissenters who arrived in America – the “Pilgrim Fathers.”

These colonists suffered terrible hardships at first, but thanks to the help of friendly Indians, they learned how to grow native food and to net fish, which was the main factor to their survival in the new homeland.

After the first harvest was completed, Gov. William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer, shared by all the Pilgrims and their Indian neighbors. They enjoyed a huge feast of turkey, deer, duck and delicious dishes from corn, cranberries, squash and pumpkins. Besides eating, they also sang, danced played games and had athletic contests. The celebration lasted three days!

Thanksgiving Day was officially declared as a national holiday in the U.S., in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.

Green Ideas

Ideas to Go Green

Solar Panels: Solar energy is expensive but cheaper than in the past. Some solar panels produce enough energy to be used by the house and to be sold to Electric Energy Companies. The investment to install panels is high, but with the time it can be compensated. It depends on the amount of energy consumed by the house, the number of panels and the volume of light they receive from the sun.
Recyclable Counters (balcões) and Sinks (pias): If you want to have a green kitchen, you can buy recyclable sinks and counters, they use recyclable glass, paper, concrete and aluminum.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (lâmpadas): They use only ¼ of the electric energy consumed by the conventional light bulbs and last up to 10.000 hours (the normal ones last only 800 to 1.000 hours). Their price varies from U$ 5 to U$ 10.

More Ideas:
- Print your things using both sides of the paper (front and back);
- Edit your files on the computer and send memos via e-mail;
- Use old pieces of paper as notes;
- Reuse old folders;
- Use recyclable paper;
- Use e-mail and telephone instead of sending letter or paper messages;
- Tear apart newspaper, used paper and recyclable packages;

Studying Abroad

Hi People!

According to an article recently published by ISTOÉ magazine (Feb 16th/2011), the best time to study abroad is now. You can take a regular High School course or even your University Graduation abroad. One thing that is very interesting is that they mention the importance and necessity of having the TOEFL® Test to take these courses. For example, for a regular graduation couse in the USA, one of the prerequisites is having the TOEFL® Test with a good score.
So, CONGRATULATIONS to our students who took the test and for those who are taking the preparation course.
